A Return to Trends

For a long time, the credo has been, whatever is liked, goes. Brands such as Gucci have made eclectic styling one of its focal points. But the decade of apparent indiscretion is now history, and a new decade has begun.

To bestow art with absolute freedom? The Carte Blanche that Ludwig Hevesi once bestowed upon a wide variety of disciplines is only permissible for fashion to a limited extent this season. It is quite clear what is becoming a trend and styling has to bow down to the new rules of the game. Fashion can no longer do as it pleases and ignores decency in the name of creative realization. Cultural appropriation is one of the keywords here that probably no longer need to be explained to anyone. Word has long been spreading about the importance of diversity and body acceptance. Empty words? Maybe at the beginning! This fact is certainly not implemented as far as would be desirable just yet, but it is still more present than a few years ago.

Fashionable statements

This is also reflected in the collections: the statements seem clearer, the cuts reduced, the patterns a little more reserved than in the past. Timelessness and restraint dominate and with their arrival, we celebrate the return to classics such as the trench coat: labels such as Versace, Balenciaga, and Burberry are currently committed to reinterpreting them. Suits, either in a colorful sixties look, such as those presented by Prada and Marc Jacobs, or short cut in black, as seen on the catwalk at Valentino
and Chloé, are in demand once again. Instead of many micro-trends, the industry seems to be focusing on core topics and is vying for the disciplines of sustainability and diversity. For example, the luxury group Kering announced its progression to a carbon-neutral, modus operandi in autumn. Dior also focused on sustainability and collaborated with activist gardening collective Coleco. Reason enough to devote further attention to this topic on the following pages and to go into detail about these much welcomed, new impulses. The current seasons are trendsetting - not just for the industry, but for society as a whole. A very welcome trend.

The show must go on: Especially niche labels such as Elaine Hersby (1), Mykke Hofmann (5), or Remain (6) rely on new concepts of performance instead of classic catwalk presentations. The new pace is also noticeable with established brands - Dolce & Gabbana (2), Louis Vuitton (3) and Hermès (4) are increasingly focusing on classics and are showing a lot of timelessness even in seasonal collections and reinterpretations of classics such as the safari jacket.
