With a black book filled with international celebrity clients, Anna Shevchenko is the go-to makeup artist based in Dubai. Having had a passion for beauty since she was young, she has gone on to create countless iconic red carpet looks. 2019 she attended international fashion forum and selected as a finalist for MAG fashion awards. 2021 she got Pro Beauty GCC best makeup artist award. So, what’s her secret to success? Hard work, determination and a lot of key networking. Kick-staring her career in the pre-social media era, booking new jobs and bringing on new clients was all through word of mouth.

Why did you decide to strike out on your own as a make-up artist?

I joined MAC at the beginning of my journey of a makeup artist. My main goal was to learn as much as I could. After four years I reached the point where I knew that I have enough experience to become independent. Also one of the benefits of being freelance is that you are your own boss. I can manage my time, choose jobs, meet more people from the industry and let my creativity flow

What does make-up mean to you?

I&rsquo;ve always been passionate about makeup. It&rsquo;s my hobby which brings me money and fulfils my ambitions. With makeup I see a lot of opportunities to grow as a professional and develop myself personally.

At what point did you decide to pursue make-up as a career?

As a person with an accountant degree I never took it serious. I always liked drawing and painting and it happened that now that art from paper I transferred into an art on people&rsquo;sfaces. &nbsp;I just decided to enroll for a makeup course and see where it takes me. As I go further I set new goals and slowly but surely achieve them.

What was your first big break?

As MAC makeup artist we worked on fashion shows and big events. First one was Sensation White in Dubai. We had to do makeup for artists. The guidelines were very specific. I started to panic and thought I don&rsquo;t know makeup at all. I&rsquo;m very grateful for support and patience of our head makeup artist who helped me to get myself together and do my best. That is very memorable moment when I realized how to work under pressure.

What keeps you creatively inspired?

I do follow other artists and get inspired by my colleagues. I see works and have my image what I would have done differently. Inspiration can come from nature, architecture, lifestyle. I can get carried away during actual process. I see outfits, accessories, fashion trends and hands just starting to create. I switch off my mind and let it flow. It&rsquo;s like a meditation.

What is your advice on how to make it in the industry?

If it&rsquo;s just a start for the new professional I would suggest to make sure they practice a lot first. In our industry we never get a second chance. So if the client happy with your clean flawless job, you would get them back and plus they with definitely recommend you to their friends. Second important aspect is personality. We work really close to people. We feel their energy and mood and they feel ours. Need to make sure once you are on set you leave your problems behind and switch to positive vibes. Collaborations should be definitely done at the beginning to build the portfolio and get connections in the field. Later on with experience can get more selective about it. And last but not least, you should really love it. There is a say&nbsp; &ldquo; if you love what you do you will never work a day in your life&rdquo;.

What are your hopes for the future?

I don&rsquo;t want to plan way ahead. So many great things in my life happened unexpectedly. What I know for sure is that I have enough knowledge and experience to share with others. And I know that after 8 years of being a professional makeup artist, after working with international fashion brands, with photographers all over the world, being published in countless magazines, after being part of fashion shows and events, doing makeup for royalties and celebrities, I still have so many opportunities to improve and grow.
