Alfred Hitchcock – legendary film director and producer of the XX century. Master of Suspense, directed over 50 movies.
His favorite designer was Edith Head, who created all the costumes for his films In America. She is the pure legend of Hollywood and won a record amount of Oskars - 8 pieces- for the design of costumes. Together they created a lot of iconic looks which are still popular and known. Collaboration with Edith Head has made suits with a silk scarf and column dress with hats very popular among women of that time.
Alfred always asked Head to attend during the filming process, so she flew with him to Paris for making the movie «To Catch a Thief». He wanted to emphasize the plot with the help of costumes. Fashion trends were the least important thing for him. Despite the fact that all characters were dressed fashionably for that time, every costume in his films has it’s own task and idea. He was using fashion as a weapon in his films.
Hitchcock always said, that if there is no important reason to use bright colors it is better to avoid them because they can distract the attention from important scenes. The sight has to be focused on character, emotions, and plot.
Hitchcock was obsessed with blondes, but at the same time, he was against very obvious sexuality. That’s why he never called such actresses as Marilyn Monroe or Brigitte Bardot.
He loved cold, discreet, confident women like Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, Kim Novak, and Tippi Hedren who became his muses. But sometimes he was not satisfied even with his favorite ladies. As an example, he said that the star of the Movie « Vertigo» Kim Novak has too big lips, what doesn’t look good for him. Nevertheless, these actresses became fashion and movie icons of the 20th century.
