Household brands Thom Browne, Dolce & Gabbana and Philosophy by Lorenzo Serafini incorporated the corset in their Resort and Fall collection. Fashion newcomers Christopher John Rogers and Dion Lee also reinterpreted the iconic piece. 

When it comes to styling, we are finally ready to say goodbye to loungewear. Instead of oversized sweatshirts and logo T-shirts, it&#39;s corsets that are now worn under blazers and over shirts. After months of rest and relaxation, one seems to be longing for stability, especially in the wardrobe.&nbsp;

The 2021 autumn and resort collections feature a mass of new interpretations of the garment, signalling that the world is also on the upswing in terms of fashion. The creations of some designers, both long-established and next generation, are perfect to spice up an outfit and show off your body.

US-American designer Thom Browne, known for highly innovative cutting techniques and precise craftsmanship, presented the corset as part of an&nbsp;eccentric office look in his 2022 Resort Collection. Over a white shirt and tie, the grey corset with white reinforcements is worn in combination with a pleated A-line skirt. As the theme of layering runs through the entire collection, trousers are worn under the skirt while a blazer with padded shoulders is put on top. Lastly, pointy Budapest shoes with a heel over cosy wool socks.

<a href="https://www.lofficiel.at/en/fashion/summer-twirls">Lorenzo Serafini</a> at Philosophy, founded by Alberta Ferretti in 1984, brings modern romance. The Pre-Fall 2021 collection features a loose version of the corset in a tartan pattern of light blue, green, red and yellow. Flared from the hips, the stand-out piece is paired with an Elizabethan collar, black riding boots and fluorescent trousers.

<a href="https://www.lofficiel.at/en/man/dolce-amp-gabbana-spring-2020">Dolce &amp; Gabbana&#39;s</a> Ready-to-Wear Autumn 2021 collection is a tribute to the 90s, full of high-tech materials and kaleidoscopic colours. This is also reflected in one of the season&#39;s many corsets. Shimmering silver and voluminous silhouettes meet black lace elements. The rest is kept futuristically monochrome with long gloves, chunky sneakers and trousers with a print reminiscent of computer graphics.

The corset always adapted to the prevailing ideal of the female body at the time. Known then as a bodice, it was reinforced with whalebone throughout the 16th and 18th century. Patterns were carefully woven into silk so that the transition between underwear and clothing was seamless. It was the goal to shape the torso like a cone, a narrow waist with a raised d&eacute;collet&eacute;.

Over the years, reinforcements such as horn or steel spirals were added, as well as the possibility of lacing the corset not only at the back but also at the front. At the beginning of the 20th century, its popularity decreased. Perceived as the enemy of the emancipated woman, it was not only associated with oppression and antiquated social norms, but also serious health risks. In fashion, it were the designs of Paul Poiret and Gabrielle &quot;Coco&quot; Chanel that ended the corset&rsquo;s lifetime, for now.&nbsp;

Things changed around 1950. With a development towards lingerie, the materials became more comfortable and elastic, the bust was only supported by a fine wire strap. Wearing a bustier was now a personal choice and, slowly but surely, the corset found its way back into the world of fashion.&nbsp;

In 1983, <a href="https://www.lofficiel.at/en/beauty/the-earthly-paradise-according-to-jean-paul-gaultier">Jean Paul Gaultier</a> celebrated the corset as a sign of female empowerment in his Dadaiste collection. Seven years later, the cone-shaped bra design was worn by <a href="https://www.lofficiel.at/en/woman/madonna-in-ulyana-sergeenko-dress">Madonna</a> during her Blond Ambition Tour and has been iconic ever since. For <a href="https://www.lofficiel.at/en/beauty/vivienne-westwood-39-s-bride">Vivienne Westwood</a>, the corset is one of the key elements in her rich archive. Especially prominent in the Caf&eacute; Society collection (1994) in collaboration with Austrian designer and husband <a href="https://www.lofficiel.at/en/categories/fashion-week?page=2">Andreas Kronthaler</a>.

It is also the designers of the new generation that seem to be taking a liking to the undeniable classic of women&#39;s fashion. New Yorker Christopher John Rogers, whose eponymous brand is worn by former First Lady <a href="https://www.lofficiel.at/en/fashion/michelle-obama-39-s-best-looks-on-the-tour-of-her-book">Michelle Obama</a> and actress <a href="https://www.lofficiel.at/en/fashion/zendaya-x-tommy-hilfiger-back-to-the-1970s">Zendaya</a>, likes to work with colour and volume. This becomes particularly evident when looking at the&nbsp; corset of his Collection 008. Made from cotton moir&eacute; in black with rainbow-coloured stitching, it is paired with wide-leg trousers in silk faill&eacute; in longitudinal stripes. A perfect example of colour blocking.

By now, Australian designer Dion Lee is well-known for his modern interpretations of the corset. The sensual yet structured designs are worn by stars such as <a href="https://www.lofficiel.at/en/pop-culture/ariana-grande-wedding-instagram">Ariana Grande</a> in her music video for her single &quot;Positions&quot;. This autumn&#39;s Ready-to-Wear collection features a denim creation with rows of buttons running along the side of the body to further accentuate the one&rsquo;s silhouette. The matching flared jeans are laced at the front, a little hint at corset lacing.

In its longstanding history, the corset has already experienced a number of&nbsp;fashion rebirths. In 2021, more designs were added, leading to the it-piece celebrating yet another comeback. Whether it&#39;s a nod to past eras, a celebration of the female body or a sign of a renewed desire for dressing up, the corset never goes out of style.
